Contours of Country with Decor Systems

Welcoming a new consciousness for old sustainable practices, we celebrate the existence of traditional knowledges that champion preservation rather than extraction. An integrated art opportunity looks back at a harmonious co-existence with nature, providing a moment of recognition of Country and its First peoples, and acknowledging their wisdom, spirit and continued narrative within the landscape.

Decor Systems is one of Australia’s largest providers of architectural acoustic solutions, found in homes, offices, galleries and commercial tennancies across the country.

This curatorial rationale allows artists to draw from innovative and sustainable cultural practices, that have unique synergies to the modern-day ambitions of the product and responsibilities of the future custodians of spaces the products will call their home.

The colonial view of habitation is objective and segmented, categorised into groups such as people, flora and fauna. In comparison, First Nations perspectives are relational and holistic and are interwoven in the ecosystem with fundamental methodologies to ensure the survival of all living things.

First Nations ecological awareness and intimate knowledge of provincial landscapes ensured harvesting was seasonal, hunting was regulated by totemic systems, and local resources were expended efficiently with very minimal environmental impact. It is an ancient and enduring science encompassing temporal and spatial understandings that is imperative to a collective vision for a greener future.

Artists are encouraged to create works that would be a subtle reminder of the interconnectedness, deep respect for Country and belonging. Artworks will talk to the many landscapes across so called Australia and provide a narrative that explores Indigenous knowledge, innovation and efficiency.

This opportunity to work with Decor systems is a chance for a broader audience to be inspired by our natural landscape, grow a deeper appreciation for Aboriginal knowledge and solid respect for the ground we all stand on.
